Start with purpose
State whether the piece is for collection, presentation or supervised practice, along with relevant experience. This determines which questions matter before appearance is discussed.
Set proportions before colours
Blade length, handle length, curvature, point form and target handling should be resolved before wrap colour or decorative fittings. A coherent silhouette carries more of the design than ornament.
Name priorities, not just parts
Rank what matters most: visible steel activity, restrained mounting, lower mass, historical reference or a particular presentation context. This helps the workshop resolve conflicts between requested features.
Use references carefully
Reference images are useful for proportion, colour and broad character, but exact copies may be infeasible or inappropriate. Mark the specific detail you want the workshop to interpret.
Approve one written build sheet
The final document should list material, dimensions, edge condition, mountings, finish, included items, estimate and available inspection records. Changes after approval may affect feasibility, cost and timing.
