Begin with purpose
A display sword, an iaido-oriented mounting and a tameshigiri sword are not interchangeable briefs. Be explicit about experience, supervision and the material you expect to cut.
Geometry before ornament
Blade length, sori, niku, kissaki and point of balance affect handling more than decorative fittings. Ask for these measurements and discuss why they suit the intended use.
Inspect the assembly
A sound tsuka fit, secure mekugi, aligned edge and appropriate saya retention are fundamental. Cosmetic polish cannot compensate for poor assembly.
Plan for ownership
Carbon steel requires dry storage, light oil and regular inspection. Confirm local import rules and whether suitable maintenance materials are available.
