What a hamon represents

Examine the boundary
Under soft directional light, look for activity that follows the structure of the steel. A uniform printed or etched line alone does not document the heat-treatment process.
Ask for process information
Request the steel type, heat-treatment description and unedited close photographs. If those details are unavailable, treat the hamon as a visual description rather than a verified performance claim.
Why polish matters
Aggressive finishing can obscure or exaggerate activity. A careful polish should preserve the blade planes while making the hardened boundary readable.
