01

Why steel was folded

Historical folding helped consolidate variable bloomery material. With clean modern steels, the practical reason and the resulting material context are different.

02

What folding changes

Repeated drawing and welding can create visible hada. The result depends on layer orientation, forge welding and the final polish.

03

What folding does not prove

Layer count alone does not establish toughness, edge retention or quality. Geometry and controlled heat treatment remain central.

04

Choosing it responsibly

Select folded steel when the grain and forging method are part of the commission brief, and ask how the billet and finish will be documented.
